THUNDERSPORT SNETTERTON: ROGERS MAINTAINS GP3 LEAD

British Moto Academy and Red Bull Rookie competitor Fraser Rogers maintained his championship lead in the GP3 cup and open 125 championship following the Snetterton round of the series over the weekend.

In near perfect weather for the three 125 races Rogers set the scene by achieving pole position with an impressive time of 1:16.697 just 0.169 of a second faster than former Red Bull Rookie Adam Blacklock, with Ross Ashman in P3, an outstanding performance by the young West Country rider who has not raced during 2009.

In addition to the regular competitors over thirty six riders entered the Snetterton round the largest grid of the year so far. The field was boosted by guest appearance of fellow Red Bull Rookie competitor Australian Dylan Mavin, and regular 125 BSB competitors Adam Blacklock and 2008 GP3 Cup Champion Tom Weeden.

The 18 lap Superpole race was shaping up to be the toughest challenge to Rogers dominance of the 125 class with the biggest threat coming from Blacklock, Weeden, Mavin and Sam Hornsey. By lap two Rogers and Weeden had pulled ahead slightly from hard chasing Gavin Lupton and Sam Hornsey.  By lap five Rogers and Weeden and pulled a second over Lupton and Hornsey.

The pair swapped lead several times on each lap; however on lap 11 Rogers made a mistake on the last chicane and was lucky to stay on the bike.

Rogers said: "I had decided to try and take Tom on the brakes around the outside, it did not stick and I took to the grass but managed to say on, when I hit the kerb the front end tucked underneath, but I managed to flick it up with my knee!"

After settling himself down he gained a second back on Weeden but settled for a safe second place.

The first event on Sunday saw Rogers not finish as a result of a flat tyre. The final race of the day looked to be a repeat of the Saturday event with Weeden, however Sam Hornsey and Joel Williams joined in the party. Weeden was caught on the line by Hornsey to take the win, Joel Williams almost snatched a podium from Rogers in third. The last lap saw a big effort by the diminutive Wiltshire boy to secure third place on the line from hard riding Joel who set the fastest lap of the race in the process.

British Moto Academy Team manager John Davies said: "We thought Fraser had a problem as it is unlike him to shy away from a scrap, we were concerned the front wheel may have been the same problem as the earlier race of tyre deflation, in the post race de-brief Fraser informed  us it was possibly a carburation issue, Snetterton is notorious for causing problems with carb set up, due to sustained full throttle requirements on small two strokes, coupled to the fact it is not far above sea level therefore carburation has got to be constantly monitored."

Rogers is on Red Bull Rookies cup duty again at the German round of the Moto GP championship over the weekend of 18/19th July.
