Wirral 100 Anglesey: Weekend race report

Mackman takes dominant five

Ian Mackman looked on course for “six of the best” but made one error over the four powerbike and two IFM-moto Senior Open races run over the two days uniquely using two different circuits, the 1.55mile Coastal and the 2.10 International.

All counting as points races, Mackman was pushed by Johnny Blackshaw and Dave Jones until the last Powerbike race on the Sunday’s international circuit where Mackman went under Blackshaw going into the tight left hander at Rocket only to go wide on the exit. Blackshaw grabbed the opening and kept the lead halting Mackman achieving his six wins.

Mackman thought he was the last man standing in the Senior open on Saturday’s final race on the Coastal Circuit.

On the latter of eight laps, he saw Simon Napier, Dave Jones and then on the last lap Blackshaw all suffering spills on his way to another win. Lee Wilson followed seconds down with Jamie Harris the best 600 taking third.

It was back to normal for the second Senior open on Sunday.

Mackman reached the first corner ahead of the pack first being chased by Jones who was overtaken by Blackshaw on lap two Mackman upped his speed widening the gap to over two seconds but Blackshaw also set a couple of fast laps narrowing the space between them to just over half a second being the only two riders to reach 86 mph.

Jamie doubles up

Three riders shared the spoils in the F600. Jamie Harris powered his Superstock Yamaha to victory in the first and last races, with Simon Napier and Jamie Devine winning one each.

The final race was a nip and tuck dice between Harris and Devine, the lead changing several times. Harris was just ahead when the flag marshal put out the chequered flag instead of the last lap flag.

Teenager Rob Varey on board his Silicone Engineering Yamaha and racing on both circuits for the first time improved progressively over the weekend rising to two fifth places on the second day.

Keith Jackson notched up four wins in the 100 to 500CC Open class but the 125s of Bryn Owen and Darren Jones raged behind Jones taking two second places to Owen’s one. In the final race, Manxman Paul Metcalf relegated the 125s to third and fourth.

Barry Evans lost his championship lead after finishing second to Tim Bradley in the Golden Era Supersport a couple of times and did not start the first race on Saturday. Bradley more than doubled his points to enjoy a 14 point margin.

Chris Ganderton was the best of the 650 Twins in the same race until Sunday saw the arrival of Dublin based Dave Butler who powered his 650 Twin to overall victory in both races.

Evans also contended the Pre Injection class, sharing ins with Chay Budden . All riders did faster laps on the longer circuit, Budden the fastest on his 750 Suzuki in the third race. Reaching a speed of nearly 80mph, Evans was the only other to clock a speed of 79 plus.
