133mph TT lap will be needed to win in 2016, says McGuinness

Isle of Man TT legend John McGuinness believes that if conditions are anything like they were last year, the top riders will be looking at producing a sub-17 minute/133mph lap to win the Superbike and Senior races in 2016.

McGuinness took the outright lap record last year with a 132.701mph effort that included a pitstop and says that breaking 133mph going under 17 minutes ‘is on’ for this year.

The ‘perfect lap’, based on the fastest recorded sectors in history, equates to a time of 16m 55.415s – 8.152s quicker than the lap record of 17m 03.567s – but he said that his lap last year from Ballacraine to Ballcraine was a fraction over 17 minutes.

“It was something like 17.001 or something, and that’s about as close as you are going to get. Looking at the top ten guys you are going to have to do that to win,” said McGuinness, speaking at the launch event.

“It all depends on the conditions. The Senior day there wasn’t much wind or sun, the track temperature was perfect, everyone was on fire, the grip level was up.

“Sometimes you get a road accident or a farmer has got fed up with the job and dropped some cow shit on the road but the track was perfect for the Senior.”
