2014 Classic TT: Lougher bounces back from 30s penalty

Ian Lougher was ecstatic with his win in Saturday's 500cc Classic TT race, the Welshman admitting that he thought his 'schoolboy error' of speeding in the pitlane had cost him any chance of a race win. The 10-times TT winner was in second place when he pitted for fuel at the end of the first lap but as he left pits, he comfortably exceeded the 60kph speed limit at 74kph.

It dropped him all the way down the order to eighth but he gradually clawed his way back up the leaderboard and with Michael Rutter and Ryan Farquhar dropping out on the third lap, he started the fourth and final lap 13.9s behind race leader Dan Cooper. The multi-cylinder Paton always had the legs on Cooper's single cylinder Manx Norton and he swept home for yet another win around the Mountain Course.

"When I came into the pits, I got that excited about what was going on that I completely forgot about the speed limit," the 51-year old said. "Obviously, these bikes don't have a speed limiter on them like the modern bikes and when I saw the board flash up 74kph, I thought 'oh no'. I only had one signal on the course, just before Ballaspur, and didn't know what was happening put I kept chipping away and it's brilliant to win,” said Lougher, speaking to bikesportnews.com

"The Paton's a brilliant bike and conditions around the course were pretty good. It was good that the race got delayed a little and apart from being a bit damp at Ramsey Hairpin and blustery on the Mountain, everything was spot on. Breaking the speed limit was a bit of a schoolboy error but we got there in the end and it's brilliant to win around here again."
