2014 Ulster GP: Bad weather calls early halt to action

Racing at today's Metzeler Ulster Grand Prix was called to a halt early with the second Supersport and Superbike races being cancelled. Poor weather had been in the area all day and, after lengthy delays caused by accidents in the Supersport races, increasing winds led Clerk of the Course Noel Johnston to make the decision to call an end to the day's proceedings after the Supertwins race with the time already approaching 7pm.

"The weather hasn't been the greatest all day but when we just had drizzle, we could run the races without any major problems but the wind speed was getting up all the time," said Johnston, speaking to bikesportnews.com this evening.

"It was gusting considerably through the Deer's Leap section and also at the top of the course around Wheeler's. We'd had two significant incidents in the two Supersport races, which we got away with relatively lightly, so the decision was made to cancel the remaining races on safety grounds."

The first Supersport race saw Dean Harrison, Dan Kneen and Keith Amor crash out at Ireland's, all receiving fractures, whilst the second saw Bruce Anstey, Ian Hutchinson, Steve Mercer and Michael Sweeney go down at high speed at Deer's Leap. The first three were all ok while Sweeney was taken to hospital for a check-up.
