Michael Dunlop is adapting fast to his new experience with 350cc and 500cc MV three-cylinder bikes in the Black Eagle Racing squad at the Classic TT, reports team owner Mark Kay.
"Michael is adjusting well, and he wants to win," Kay said. "He's giving good feedback, and says the bikes have good handling and and acceleration, and are quick. The only thing that I've advised him on is to be careful not to lock the back wheel on downshifts."
Classic bikes lack the slipper clutches of modern bikes, but Dunlop will be used to that after riding Andy Molnar's 350 and 500cc Manx Norton singles at previous Classic TTs. Now he is adjusting to bikes that rev far higher, to around 12,000 or 12,500rpm. His 500cc MV delivers around 76bhp, and the 350 56bhp.
Black Eagle have previously won both the 350cc and 500cc Classic TTs, and Dunlop's appearance alongside Dean Harrison - who rides a 500cc triple and 350cc four for the team - adds interest to an already highly competitive race.
The MVs will battle with Honda fours, Paton twins and Matchless G50 and Manx Nortons for victory, with the British singles having the advantage of not having to stop, for fuel in the four-lap race.
