2016 North West 200: Lintin wins red-flagged Supertwin race

Ivan Lintin took victory in a shortened Supertwins race at the North West 200 on Thursday evening, although the race was overshadowed by a third lap incident involving race leaders Ryan Farquhar and Dan Cooper. Race leader Farquhar crashed at Dhu Varren with Cooper unable to avoid him and the red flag came out soon after. Both riders have been taken to hospital although race organisers have issued a statement saying neither has life-threatening injuries.

The race itself saw Farquhar, Cooper, Lintin and James Hillier locked in battle for all three of the scheduled four laps with KMR Kawasaki rider Farquhar taking the holeshot. He led at the end of the opening lap from Cooper, Hillier, Lintin, Jeremy McWilliams and Martin Jessopp.

The leading four had broken away at the head of the field but a double slipstream allowed Hillier to hit the front on the high-speed run to University. Farquhar was able to use his superior braking though to regrab the lead but Cooper retaliated and it was he who led at the end of the second lap.

Farquhar went ahead again on the third lap as Cooper was briefly relegated to third. Lintin, meanwhile, was clawing back ground after a mistake and it looked like it would be a terrific final lap battle between the four riders. However, Farquhar appeared to lose the front at Dhu Varren and both he and his bike piled into the air fencing with Cooper unable to take any avoiding action.

Lintin and Hillier eased their pace immediately but with no red flag immediately forthcoming, they resumed racing and so Lintin started the final lap in the lead. The race was soon stopped though and eventually Lintin was declared the winner from Hillier, McWilliams, Jessopp, Malachi Mitchell-Thomas and Michael Sweeney.

Cooper has been taken to Coleraine hospital with Farquhar transferred to Belfast.
