2017 Classic TT: Johnston’s heroic ride to second in Junior

Gutsy Lee Johnston finished second in the Junior Classic TT on his Black Eagle MV triple despite riding with three broken fingers and two missing fingernails on his throttle and front-brake hand.

The 28-year-old mangled his right hand when he was thrown out of a 600cc F2 Yamaha sidecar outfit being driven by his Black Eagle team-mate Dean Harrison at Jurby airfield earlier in the week.

Johnston withdrew from riding the beefy Team Classic Suzuki 1216cc XR69 in the Superbike event, but rode heroically in the Junior race to give Black Eagle a podium position.

Their two MVs - Dean Harrison rode a four-cylinder version - did not experience the problems that eliminated their two 500cc bikes from Saturday’s Senior race. Black Eagle were trying a different make of fuel, but the carburettors on both bikes started sticking in the race. They reverted to the original fuel for the 350 race.
