Prime Minister David Cameron has thrown his support behind new legislation that could see bike racing allowed on public roads in the near future.
Speaking at the Williams F1 headquarters in Oxfordshire today, Cameron said the move would be “great” for motorsport and would mean “more races, more events and more money coming into our country”.
“I can announce today that we are going to enable more road races for GB motor sport. We think this will be really useful to British motor sport: more races, more events, more money coming into the country and more success for this extraordinary industry,” said the Prime Minister.
Currently, the Road Traffic Act doesn’t allow road closures for motorsport in England, Scotland and Wales but Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man have different regulations.
Local councils would have devolved power to allow races on public roads to be organised. It would then be down to the hi-viz and clipboard mob, and insurance companies, to put the mockers on it.
