Todd dominates 2022 Southern 100

Davey Todd dominated this week’s Southern 100 road races on the Isle of Man with five wins from his seven starts including Thursday’s feature Solo Championship race.

In just his second appearance on the 4.25-mile Billown Course, the Milenco by Padgetts Honda rider opened his account with a win in Tuesday evening’s first 1000cc race which was made easier after DAO Racing’s Dean Harrison retired.
With good weather each day, there was little to choose between the two riders in the remaining three ‘big bike’ races with Harrison turning the tables on Todd in Wednesday’s race albeit by just 0.094s. Todd’s consolation was a new lap record of 116.141mph.
Thursday saw Todd come out on top once more but it was even closer this time with Harrison just 0.032s adrift at the end of the seven laps. The Kawasaki man upped the lap record to 116.452mph with Michael Dunlop third on the Buildbase Suzuki, just as he had been the previous day.
The feature Solo Championship race, held over nine laps, saw Todd and Harrison again go head to head but although Harrison claimed the new outright lap record with a stunning lap of 116.941mph, it was Todd who got the verdict by of 0.061s as they flashed across the line.
Dunlop had no answer to the flying duo and had to settle for third once more with Jamie Coward (KTS Racing by Steadplan Yamaha), Nathan Harrison (Quayside Garage Honda) and Ryan Kneen (BMW) rounding out the top six.
The three 600cc races were even closer with Todd, Harrison, Dunlop and Coward disputing victory in each race, Todd taking victory in Wednesday’s race as just 1.775s covered the quartet at the chequered flag.
Thursday’s two encounters followed a similar pattern but it was Dunlop who took the opener with the four riders again swapping places regularly. Harrison, Todd and Coward followed him home with a gap of only 0.661s separating the four riders on this occasion!
Dunlop again set the fastest lap in the final 600cc race of the week at 110.998mph, but it was only good enough for third as it was Todd who again stood on the top step with Harrison sandwiched between them. Coward took fourth once more after dropping back on the final lap.
The two Lightweight encounters were equally close with Coward (KTS Racing Kawasaki) and Rob Hodson (Dafabet Racing Kawasaki) contesting the wins. The pairing exchanged places on each lap of each race and they shared the race wins, Coward taking victory on Wednesday and Hodson taking the spoils on Thursday. Coward set a new lap record of 105.934mph.
In the two Sidecar races, Peter Founds/Jevan Walmsley were victorious on each occasion but they were made to work hard by Ryan and Callum Crowe in Thursday’s Championship before the Manx pairing went out on lap four of eight. Such was their pace, both pairings broke the 102mph barrier with the Crowes setting a new lap record of 102.398mph whilst Tim Reeves/Kevin Rousseau took second in each race.
Michael Russell took both of the 600cc ‘B’ races with Paul Turner winning the Consolation race.
