TT 2009: MCGUINNESS WINS 15TH TT; BREAKS LAP RECORD

HM Plant Honda's John McGuinness has gone past Mike Hailwood's TT winning record, taking his 15th TT win in this morning's Superbike race and breaking the official outright lap record with a 130.442mph circuit on lap two which included a pitstop.

McGuinness was chased hard for the whole of the six laps by team-mate Steve Plater, who also set his first ever 130mph lap with a 130.122 and Hydrex Honda's Guy Martin was third, making it a Honda clean-sweep on the podium.

"It was a bit dusty and not much grip out there for the first couple of laps but I knew I had to go hard from the start which is what I have done in the past to make a bit of a break," said McGuinness.

"I managed to maintain the 11-second lead but I was strong in certain bits and weak in others. Steve was strong in some places too and he kept coming at me. The team told me Steve was catching me so on lap five I had real good go and was able to cruise on the last lap.

"I am over the moon to with my 15th TT and I can't really believe it and it's about time some of these lads kicked my arse!"
“I didn’t feel I was pushing too hard,” said Plater after the race. “To be honest I just wanted to safeguard my second place and try to get HM Plant Honda the one-two.  It was a bit windy in places and catching me out at times and also not so much grip this morning. But the track is going to get better as long as the rain stays away. 1m 30.122s lap – yeah that will do for now.”
Gary Johnson was the first man to head down Glencrutchery Road but by the time the leaders had passed through Glen Helen, McGuinness was already two seconds in front of Manxman Conor Cummins with Ian Hutchinson third and Steve Plater catching Johnson for fourth.

McGuinness caught Johnson on the road going into Ramsey and had pulled out a five second lead over Cummins as Martin got into his stride and began to catch the McAdoo Kawasaki man while Plater was beginning to wind the wick up on the sister HM Plant Honda Fireblade.

By the end of lap one, which saw Relentless Suzuki's Bruce Anstey retire at Ballacraine and Ryan Farquhar stop in the pits, McGuinness was still five seconds in front with a 129.779mph opening lap but Martin had all but caught Cummins with Plater only three seconds in arrears. McGuinness also took the Superbike TT lap record with that circuit.

On lap two, Martin took second from Cummins at Ballaugh Bridge but McGuinness was crusing away from the Lincolnshire rider, upping the gap to 8.62s at Ramsey Hairpin which climbed to ten seconds by the time both riders got to the grandstand and McGuinness broke his own outright lap record.

Cummins suffered some problems during his pitstop and dropped right off the pace but Plater's crew got his bike out so fast, he had a nine second advantage over McGuinness as they came out for lap three.

By the time Glen Helen came round for the third time, McGuinness had regained the lead by some 7.9s but Plater had gone past Martin for second place while Johnson was some 45s behind McGuinness before the start of lap four.

Plater, meanwhile, cut the gap to McGuinness from 12s at Ramsey Hairpin to 8.4s by the time they came back down the Glencrutchery Road to start lap four, which was down again to 7.89s at Glen Helen. McGuinness got a signal from his team and began to wind his pace up again, stretching the lead to 9.44s at Ballaugh, 11.18s at Ramsey and 11.72 at the Bungalow before Plater managed to claw some back on the way down the mountain.

Michael Dunlop retired at the end of lap four as Martin and Johnson, together on the road, had a near-collision in the stop box. Cummins was chasing hard for fifth place, going past Hutchinson on lap four.

After a fast stop, McGuinness was in control for the rest of the race, keeping Plater at around 10s behind him until the last lap when Plater knocked off the throttle so he was 20s behind his team-mate at Ramsey on the last lap and finally crossed the line 18.11s in arrears with Martin 52.53s behind McGuinness and Hutchinson stealing fourth place from Johnson on the last lap, 1'32.50 off the pace.

Jenny Tinmouth finished her first ever TT in 44th position, setting a 114mph lap on the sorrymate.com Honda Fireblade. Cummins' Kawasaki blew up at the Verandah on the final lap and Ketih Amor retired on lap three.
