TT 2009: PLATER WINS DRAMA-PACKED SENIOR TT

HM Plant Honda's Steve Plater has won this afternoon's Isle of Man Senior TT with a fastest lap time of 130.490mph - but it was heartbreak for team-mate John McGuinness who broke down out of the lead on lap four.

It is the first time Plater has taken the main race victory and adds to his Supersport win from last year. McGuinness's chain failed at Cruickshanks Corner on the run in to Ramsey when he was leading Plater by nearly 23s and had broken the outright lap record with a 131.578mph circuit on lap two.
Manxman Conor Cummins crossed the line in second place, doing his first-ever 130mph lap with a 130.225 while Gary Johnson was third despite getting a 10-second penalty for not coming to a halt in the stop box. Veteran Adrian Archibald was fourth and Carl Rennie fifth.

Hydrex Honda's Guy Martin suffered a similar failure to McGuinness on the same lap as his chain broke coming into the pits and Keith Amor's race also finished on lap four as his wheel spindle wasn't seated correctly.

McGuinness made his usual lightning-fast start, putting a 2.42s lead into Plater by Glen Helen on lap one which he extended to 4.37s at Ballaugh Bridge and then went through the Sulby speed racp at 190.1mph on his way into Ramsey.

Plater pulled back fractions of a second while Cummins was beginning to put a gap on Kiwi Bruce Anstey and two-times winner this year, Ian Hutchinson on the Padgett's Honda with a slow-starting Martin moving up the leaderboard from seventh.

On the first climb up The Mountain, Plater pegged back half a second as he went through the Bungalow and by the end of lap one, McGuinness's lead was 3.68s. The Morecambe missile broke the outright lap record from a standing start on lap one with a 130.953mph speed, as did Plater whose fastest lap was the first.

As Cummins went through Glen Helen on lap two, he was 10.30s behind McGuinness but had put some more time into Anstey as Martin started to catch Hutchinson for fifth place. Once again, McGuinness was blisteringly fast through the Ramsey section, extending his lead to 9.77s over Plater.

It was no surprise to the crowd that McGuinness smashed the outright lap record on lap two, which includes coming into the pits, as he was 14.67s in the lead and had gone round more than a mile an hour faster than the Lincolnshire man. It was bad luck for Anstey once more today, as he retired at the 33rd Milestone.

Lap three saw a seemingly-unstoppable McGuinness extending his lead 20.58s while Martin had pulled a sizeable gap on Hutchinson and was starting to make in-roads into Cummins' advantage.

Disaster struck McGuinness on lap four as his chain failed, handing the lead to Plater who was 13s ahead of Cummins at the Grandstand with Martin in third, but the Hydrex Honda rider retired in the pits and won't be a happy bunny.

Plater controlled the race from the front as Hutchinson's podium bid went by the wayside at Quarterbridge when he slid off unhurt and William Dunlop retired at the same place.

Jenny Tinmouth upped her pace to a 116.835mph lap but didn't get a flying lap in the race was stopped due to rain on the west part of the circuit.
