East CoastRacing's Gary Johnson was in dreamland after taking his first ever Isle of Man TT victory on earlier today, the Lincolnshire rider having dominated the second Supersport 600cc race.
Three seconds to the good as early as Glen Helen, the 30-year old kept adding to his lead through each sector and a superb first lap of 125.587mph gave him a lead of almost 10 seconds. Lapping quicker still second time around at 125.892mph (the fastest lap of the race), this added another five seconds to his advantage and, well clear of the confusion going on behind him, he was able to control the race for the final two laps. John McGuinness and Cameron Donald ate into the lead in the final lap but his eventual winning margin was still 8.4s.
Speaking later, a delighted, yet seemingly stunned, Johnson said; "I knew I needed to have a good start and thought if I could nail the first lap I'd be there or thereabouts and from that side of things it couldn't have gone any better - I wasn't pissing around was I...
"I wanted to try and get into the lead and try and hold my position and to see my board on the first lap going +3, +6, +9 was an awesome sight. I don't know what happened to Michael Dunlop but my bike never missed a beat today, it was faultless. We'd had a few problems during practice with electrical issues , a spark plug broke whilst we also tried different engine specs but that first lap allowed me to get a good lead and by half race distance I was in a position where I could control it.
"The Pirelli tyres were consistent and the engine was fast so it made my job that bit easier. I came here for the first time in 2007 and the dream was to one day win one and to be sitting here now as a TT winner sounds nice doesn't it? I was a bit down after the Superbike race but this more than makes up for it and to get the garland from Giacomo Agostini just added to the moment - he's a legend and one cool dude."
