TT 2013: Dunlop cracks 130mph despite birdstrike

Honda TT Legends' Michael Dunlop staked his claim to a win in tomorrow's Dainese Superbike TT after cracking the 130mph lap barrier for the first time and hitting a bird in the process of his quickest lap.

Dunlop lapped in 130.984mph on his flying lap after posting a 129.981mph from a standing start but says that he has some more to come.

"It could be better. I hit a bird out the back there and it was some slap as well. First lap not that great, second lap a bit better," said Dunlop, in his usual style.

Nineteen-time winner John McGuinness was second fastest on a 131.105mph lap after a relatively slow start. Dunlop's team-mate went round in 126.940mph on his first lap, then upping to a 129.610 on his second, followed by yet another 130+mph on the third.

"Got some spin from the rear, I don't know why and I got held up a little bit buto disrespect to the other riders," said McGuinness after this third lap.

Gary Johnson was third quickest, posting 129.610mph from a standing start but pulling in to concentrate on his Supersport and Superstock rides for the rest of the session. Michael Rutter, on the third Legends Fireblade, put in a 128.638 on his second lap for fourth

James Hiller put in his fastest lap ever with 128.138, also from a standing start, to bag fifth place while HM Plant Honda's Bruce Anstey was fifth fastest on a 127.780mph lap but you never can tell with the horizontal Kiwi.

Ramsey's Conor Cummins was next up with a 127.339 on his Milwaukee Yamaha with team-mate William Dunlop on almost an identical speed of 127.336. Cameron Donald was eighth on a 126.430 with Guy Martin, Shaun Anderson and Steve Mercer completing the top ten.

Newcomer Josh Brookes upped his pace to 124.476mph on his second lap after starting the session on his Superstock bike.
