Milwaukee Yamaha’s Josh Brookes and Ian Hutchinson will compete at this year’s Isle of Man TT after an agreement has been reached between Shaun Muir Racing, Yamaha, Milwaukee and the festival organisers.
The team will use their MCE British Superbike-spec Motec ECU non-electronics in the Dainese Superbike TT after a change in regulations stated that, a kit ECU or standard wiring were the only options - ruling out the trick Magneti Marelli system that SMR uses on their roads YZF-R1s.
A huge bone of contention is that the likes of Honda and Kawasaki have very advanced kit ECUs while the Yamaha version lagged somewhat behind, and Brookes and Hutchinson would suffer at the top end of the performance bubble - the difference could mean only 130mph laps are possible instead of 131.
Milwaukee UK commercial director Dale McElveen has re-instated his firm’s support for SMR - removed as a protest over the whole regulations debacle - which means the team can now book themselves back on the entry list.
Brookes, who announced at the weekend he would ride a R6 at the North West 200, said: “Last week I was happy to find out that I’d be riding a specially build R6 Milwaukee Yamaha at the North West 200, but the TT is the big one for me in terms of road racing, so I’m delighted Milwaukee is now back onboard.”
The agreement comes after Hutchinson spoke with Bikesport News earlier this week and said he knew something was happening in the background. Read that story in the lastest issue, out today.
