TT 2014: Dean Harrison wins Lightweight TT

Dean Harrison ensured the TT was a family affair as he won the BikeNation Lightweight TT to join his dad Conrad as a first time winner on the Island – the first time that has happened in the same week in the history of the event.

Harrison, riding the RC Express Kawasaki, took charge of the race from the start, leading all of the way and apart from the fuel light flashing on as he crossed the Mountain on the final lap, he had a problem free three lapper.

“I had made mind up to attack from the start and I rode as hard as I could – I just kept pushing on as much as I could,” explained Harrison. “I sat in Keith’s (Amor) slipstream to conserve fuel but I’ve done it.”

By the time Harrison had reached Glen Helen on the opening lap, one of the pre-race favourites Ivan Lintin had stopped with machine problems at Union Mills. Harrison edged further ahead by the mile with last year’s race winner James Hillier riding hard to try to match his pace, but as they pitted for fuel after the opening lap Harrison had an advantage of 9.6seconds with James Cowton running third ahead of Keith Amor and Jamie Hamilton.

Harrison increased his lead on the second lap, crossing the line 16 seconds up on Hillier, and then despite a few anxieties about fuel, he maintain his advantage as he powered towards that maiden race win on the Island which has finally confirmed by a margin of 14.626secs over Hillier.

Cowton completed the podium finishers, some nine seconds adrift, but 3.4secs up on Jamie Hamilton with Olie Linsdell taking sixth ahead of Ryan Farquhard as Dan Cooper, Michaell Dokoupil and top newcomer Martin Jessopp.
