TT 2016: Johnson makes a steady start in Supersport

Having only put in a handful of laps on the T3 Racing Triumph at Cartagena and Brands Hatch earlier in the season, Gary Johnson made a steady start to his TT camapign during opening practice on Saturday evening.

A double winner in the Supersport class, the most recent being the 2014 Supersport race on the Smiths Racing Triumph, the Lincolnshire ace put in three laps on the 675cc Triumph Daytona and despite being overgeared, he managed a best lap of 120.837mph to place ninth overall on the leaderboard.

"Apart from a few laps at Cartagena in March and then a couple of sessions around the Brands Hatch Indy circuit, it was my first time out on the bike and with new suspension and Motec, it was a totally different bike. I went out and followed Dean Harrison but the bike was massively overgeared so I could only use five gears,” he told BSN.

“I came in and we went three teeth bigger on the rear sprocket and it definitely helped. We're a bit down on top end speed but my sector times were good so when I string it all together, the times will improve for sure."

Johnson also put in two laps on the WK Bikes/CF Moto machine in the Lightweight class although it was again far from trouble-free, a water leak coming over the Mountain resulting him slackening his pace slightly. A lap of 111.128mph was the seventh fastest on the night.

"I jumped on the Twin for a couple of laps and it was going well until a pipe came off the water expansion bottle. It sprayed a bit of water over me so I pulled up on the Mountain before I got going again. It was also misfiring a little bit but new plugs and coils should cure that."

"The course was a bit dusty and slippy in places particularly at Sarah's, where I tucked the front a bit, and the Waterworks but overall it was a solid first night so I'm looking forward to getting out on the big bikes now."

Johnson is riding the Penz13.Com BMW machines in the Superbike and Superstock classes.
