After two podiums at Portimao Alex Lowes could now challenge for a top-three finish in the 2024 World Superbike Championship.
Across the weekend at Portimao Alex Lowes did not finish outside of the top five in the three races. In Race One Lowes finished in fifth place, but his stand-out day was on Sunday. The British rider stood on the podium in both the Superpole Race and Race Two as he finished third in both.
These were Lowes' eighth and ninth podiums of the season, and only his third round of the season where he has stood on the podium twice across the weekend.
"I am happy with my Sunday, I am back on the podium again, a full-length podium let's say," a grinning Lowes said after Race Two. "It has been one of my better weekends of the year, it has been enjoyable."
Lowes went on to explain how much he is enjoying the season and the feeling he is getting from his Kawasaki this season.
"I am really enjoying riding the bike, I am able to ride on the limit and I enjoy it. I feel fast. The team has a great atmosphere, we are enjoying it all together. I am already looking forward to Magny-Cours, so yeah a positive weekend."
After Bautista crashed in Race Two and Lowes finished in third place the British rider is now only 10 points behind the Spaniard. With Lowes in fourth and Bautista in third, he has a genuine chance to challenge for a top-three finish this season. This is something that Lowes played down when asked about, but he does want to put on a fight at Magny-Cours in a month.
"I try to do the best I can in the standings. But the reality is he has been faster than us he has just had a few mistakes. I have been consistent, I have had some mistakes of my own, but in general, I have been consistent. I just feel like I need to prove my speed in the races a little bit more to fight with the guys in front. But Magny-Cours is a track I enjoy, I have had some good results there, so why not put on a good fight and see if we can challenge the top three in the Championship."
