Aragon WSBK: Biaggi bags first victory of the year

Alitalia Aprilia's Max Biaggi took his first World Superbike win of the year at Motorland Aragon this afternoon when a mistake by race one winner Marco Melandri handed him a six-second lead with only a handful of laps left.

Melandri was sitting on Biaggi's back wheel, ready for the Roman Emperor to make a mistake as he did in the first outing, but it was the Yamaha man who erred, losing the front and while trail-braking into the corner off the long straight and it was only the big run off area that saved his blushes.

After a slow start, Althea Ducati's Carlos Checa had a lonely race for the final podium spot while Michel Fabrizio, on the Alstare Suzuk, was equally alone for fourth. Joan Lascorz was given fifth place when team-mate Tom Sykes lobbed it on lap seven but was unhurt.

The first proper scrap was in the shape of the fight for sixth between Eugene Laverty and Noriyuki Haga in his 300th WSB race which the Irishman won while Leon Camier started well but dropped back to take eighth. The former BSB champion didn't make his usual late rally so we can only speculate at a bad rear tyre.

Leon Haslam eventually got the better of Ayrton Badovini for ninth but will not be happy having to work so hard for a top ten spot and being given such a thin time by a man supposedly on an inferior motorcycle. Team-mate Troy Corser was torpedoed by Maxine Berger on lap one. It wasn't a very exciting race, as you can probably tell...
