Yakhnich’s Jules Cluzel pipped DMC Panavto-Yamaha’s Kev Coghlan to the post by one two-hundredths of a second - just as the chequered flag appeared in the second World Supersport free practice session at Aragon, this afternoon.
For the majority of the session, Coghlan proved the man to beat – bettering his fastest time from the first session and going even quicker to lap a 2'02.480, and it looked like Coghlan would bag a provisional pole spot – but it was not to be and the Frenchman set a 2‘2.461 to push the Scot down to second.
After the initial fifteen minutes of the session no other rider was able to out pace the time set by Coghlan in the opening outing of 2’02.829. Pata Honda’s Michael Van Der Mark came close in the first quarter with a 2’03.043. But five minutes later the Dutch lad pulled it out of the bag with a 2’02.684, setting the quickest Supersport lap of the day so far.
While Van Der Mark was dominating the session Kawasaki Intermoto rider Florian Marino, his team-mate PJ Jacobsen and Yakhnich’s Jules Cluzel were all vying for that top three spot on the timing screens. With less than twenty minutes remaining it was Marino who had the added speed on his Kawasaki ZX-6R to place himself third.
But Coghlan was not going to see himself fall down the pecking order and clocked a 2’02.480 – going two tenths of a second faster that Van Der Mark and edged his way to the top once again of the timesheets – only for Cluzel to go quicker again.
Van Der Mark finished the afternoon in third with a 2’02.684, with Kawasaki Intermoto’s Florian Marino and Pata Honda’s Lorenzo Zanetti completing the top five.
Triple champ Mahi Racing’s Kenan Sofuoglu could only manage a top six place, followed by former BSB rider PJ Jacobsen – who clocked his best time of 2’03.362.
CIA Insurance rider Jack Kennedy rounded off the top ten, and was able to go two tenths of a second faster than his team-mate Raffaele De Rosa. Com Plus SMS rider Fraser Rogers ended the day 24th on the Supersport timesheets.
