Scotland’s Kev Coghlan gave the new Yamaha R1 its first European Superstock 1000 podium at Motorland Aragon’s World Superbike round after a race-long scrap with Roberto Tamburini and Lorenzo Savadore.
Coghlan, who switched to the factory-backed MRS team from World Supersport over the winter, just didn’t have an answer to the pace of the Aprilia and BMW, and looked like he just ran out of rear tyre in the closing stages.
Tamburini had followed Savadore for the whole of the last lap but then used the S1000RR’s speed to slipstream the RSV4 and just popped out of the bubble into the last corner to take the win.
“I was struggling for grip front and rear with the higher track temperature.I’m happy with that first time out on the new R1M and things can only move forward from here,” said Coghlan.
