PTR Honda's Sam Lowes took his second World Supersport win of the year at Motorland Aragon this afternoon after Kenan Sofuoglu was penalised by race direction for trying to give Fabien Foret a Glasgow Kiss at 180mph.
The Turkish rider took issue with something that Foret had done and rode into him in the middle of the track's 1.8km back straight. Officials took almost immediate action and dropped the former champion three places down the order from his position where the incident took place, so he ended the race in fifth after trying to take his place in parc ferme.
Foret played the incident down saying: "I don't know what happened, maybe it was a bit windy."
The result means that Lowes moves into second place in the championship standings and only 16 points behind Kawasaki's Sofuoglu. Fabien Foret occupied second on the rostrum with South African Sheridan Morias, who is also Sofuoglu's team-mate, in third place. Broc Parkes took fourth place with the aforementioned Turkish rider in fifth.
"I'd like to say a massive thank you to my team. It was difficult in the end because I knew Kenan had a penalty and I was actually in first position but I rode my race and it was good. Already yesterday I knew I had a good race pace and just needed to get a good start from fifth and then hang in there," said Lowes.
"I just put my head down and got into my rhythm. I took my time because I knew it was going to be a long race. We're back in second overall, and I'm looking forward to fighting for more victories and the championship. We've got Brno next which I like a lot and Silverstone which is my second home race, so I'm really looking forward to that."
Martin Jessopp didn't race as he damaged his coccyx in a crash yesterday.
