Yakhnich Yamaha's Sam Lowes lost out to reigning World Supersport Champion Kenan Sofuoglu in a last-lap dice for pole position at Motorland Aragon, losing out to the Turk by a little over a tenth of a second.
The Lincolnshire rider took the lead from Sofuoglu's Kawasaki with ten minutes remaining, posting a 2'01.610, just slower than his final free practice lap, but Soguoglu wasn't to be denied and his last effort saw a 2'01.450 to take pole.
Veteran Fabien Foret took third place late on with South African Sheridan Morais in fourth. Scotland's Kev Coghlan had been sitting pretty in third right to the death but was bumped to fifth, just ahead of Michael Van Der Mark.
Luca Scassa and Lorenzo Zanetti were next along with Rivamoto's Jack Kennedy occupying 16th place and Christian Iddon down in 22nd. The MV Agusta is down on top speed, but the former Supermoto star was still ahead of his experienced team-mate Roby Rolfo in 22nd.
