Althea Ducati's Carlos Checa has taken his third pole position from three World Superbike races in 2011 at Assen this afternoon, holding off a charge from serial qualifier Jakub Smrz late in the final session with Yamaha's Eugene Laverty in third place.

Checa was a quarter of a second faster than the field in the final session while Noriyuki Haga just nicked the final front-row spot from Castrol Honda's Jonathan Rea with his final lap. Max Biaggi will start from sixth on the Alitalia Aprilia with Tom Sykes next to him. Marco Melandri starts eighth after a crash ruled him out of contention.

Superpole two

Jakub Smrz 1'35.523

Carlos Checa 1'35.536

Jonathan Rea 1'35.552

Both Leon Camier and Leon Haslam were both knocked out in the second session despite them setting their respective fastest times of the weekend so far. Camier's final lap looked to be good enough but he lost four-tenths in the final split and was relegated by his own team-mate when Biaggi went into sixth.

Smrz banged in his lap in the middle of the session to take top spot but the top three were covered by less than a tenth of a second. The top eight were covered by three tenths, it was that close.

Marco Melandri 1'35.664

Laverty and Melandri set their fast times on the same lap to take the top two spots and more than likely used a qualifier each and their times bumped Haslam down from third before Corser and Biaggi also went quicker, bouncing Camier to tenth even though he had done a sub-1'36s lap.

Rea was in the drop zone but did a lap towards the end to make sure he went through while yesterday's fastest man Smrz was the last rider to make it into the second session. Alstare Suzuki's Michel Fabrizio tried a last-lap dash but missed out by one one-hundredth of a second.
