Assen WSBK: Iddon bags provisional front row

ParkinGo MV Agusta Corse rider Christian Iddon was narrowly pipped to the post in the final seconds of the World Supersport practice qualifying session at Assen, as Goeleven rider Andrea Antonelli ended up setting the fastest lap time in the final session of the day with a time of 2’04.455.

Stockport rider, Iddon did set the fastest lap time with only five minutes remaining, and it looked like he would go on to claim his first provisional pole of the year, and when the chequered flag came down he clocked a time of 2’04.540, just under the time set by the Italian. But it was a great effort by the Englishman considering he ended up on the gravel, not once but twice during the session.

Reigning World Supersport champ MAHI Racing Team India’s Kenan Sofuoglu, was determined to make more of an impact in the afternoon practice laps, and even led in the time sheets on his ninth lap, but he pitted quite early, meaning Iddon, Antonelli and Suriano Racing Team's, Matthew Scholtz were able to improve on their lap times.  South African Scholtz finished with a lap time of 2’04.562, followed closely Sofuoglu with a time of 2’04.818.

Pata Honda’s Michael Van Der Mark rounded up the top five on the time-sheets, and did manage to complete the whole session, with a time of 2’04.944. The youngster did crash his bike on turn ten, early on but he did manage to rejoin the rest to complete the practice qualifying session.

Dubliner, Rivamoto’s Jack Kennedy had a solid time out on the Assen track, and ended the day fifteenth with a time of 2’07.00. Scottish rider, Kawasaki DMC-Lorenzini’s Kev Coghlan could not emulate his success from the first free practice session this morning, and could only manage nineteenth overall with a lap time of 2’08.606.

Yakhnich Motorsport’s Sam Lowes only completed two laps during the whole session, and did not make an impact like he did a few hours before. The twin did set a time of 2’12.047, before he headed back to his garage, meaning he finished just inside the top thirty.
