Kawasaki's Joan Lascorz will remain a patient in intensive care until all the mucus on his lungs has cleared and then he will be taken to a specialist rehabilitation hospital in Barcelona.
The Spanish star suffered a damaged C6 vertebrae in an Imola testing crash. He was operated on and then taken to the Vall d'Hebron hospital in Spain. Doctors are waiting for swelling to go down before they can make a prognosis but Lascorz is conscious and able to move his arms.
"Joan at this moment is conscious and remains hospitalized at the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Hospital Vall d'Hebron in Barcelona, at least until the mucus in the lungs is gone. The idea was to start the rehabilitation program in these days, but doctors have suggested to wait until next week to transfer to another specialist hospital," said team manager Guim Roda.
"About the process of recovery from spinal cord injury, we reserve the prognosis until Joan will not leave the intensive care unit and start of the rehabilitation program. At this moment it is only right to remain cautious due to the severity of injuries and recovery times. For this kind of injury you measure improvements from week to week, not day by day.
"First we want to thank friends, media, experts and fans for their support and affection shown in recent weeks. We are grateful to all physicians, leaders of the Federation of Catalan and Spanish Motorcycling for supply work in these days, always present next to Joan with his closest friends and especially parents Juan and Maribel."
