Yakhnich Motorsport’s Sam Lowes will start the World Supersport race from pole position at Assen tomorrow. The Lincolnshire twin was on a mission this afternoon out on the Dutch circuit and with thirty five minutes remaining of the qualifier the Yamaha rider was unmovable at the top of the time-sheets, clocking an impressive time of 1’38.375.
Reigning World Supersport champ MAHI Racing’s Kenan Sofuoglu continued throughout the session to try and dethrone Lowes from the top spot, but could not manage to break into the 1’38 barrier, and came away from the session with a time of 1’39.018.
Rivamoto’s Jack Kennedy was so close to claiming a front row start, but was cruelly demoted to the second row, after a frenzied last lap by Sofuoglu’s team-mate Fabien Foret, who went over the line third fastest with a time of 1’39.266. Dubliner, Kennedy was only a fraction behind the Frenchman, and during all his time out on track was never outside the top five.
ParkinGo MV Agusta Corse rider Roberto Rolfo rounded off the top five and will start on the second row of the grid, even after he crashed during the last ten minutes of qualifying, but a time of 1’39.445 was enough to secure his place near the front of the grid.
Rolfo’s team-mate Brit, Christian Iddon could not manage to bag a front row start, even after his impressive display out on the Assen track yesterday. The Stockport native finished the session just outside the top ten with a time of 1’39.928, ending the day just behind Pata Honda’s Michael Van Der Mark, in twelfth.
Scottish rider, Kawasaki DMC-Lorenzini’s Kev Coghlan had a consistent qualifying session, but never managed to progress into the top half of the time-sheets, and ended up sixteenth overall, clocking his fastest lap of 1’40.086.
