The Motocorsa Ducati team have become a hot topic of conversation in recent days as their 2024 WorldSBK lineup is unknown. Yet the team is holding out hope of retaining Axel Bassani as their lead rider for next season.
Axel Bassani has been with the Motocorsa Racing Team since he entered into WorldSBK in 2021. In that time the young Italian has claimed five podium finishes for the team, and is currently fifth in the Championship this season.
The Motocorsa Team have a good connection with Bassani and it has been made very clear that he is their number one choice for next season. It has been rumoured that Motocorsa will run a two rider team next season, but they still want Bassani to lead their squad next year.
The Motocorsa Team Principal, Lorenzo Mauri, sat down with WorldSBK.com after the Italian round of the season at Imola and opened up about their 2024 rider lineup.
“About 2024, we are waiting for Axel and his manager, Alberto’s decision to make a decision about us, too," began team principal Lorenzo Mauri. "We have not given them a deadline to let us know. I have spoken with Alberto, his manager, telling him ‘if you get a deal with someone, let me know'.”
"Several riders are knocking on the door of our team," continued Mauri. "Probably, we'll have two bikes but firstly, I want to understand what Axel is going to do. Most of these riders are riders from the Grand Prix paddock, so MotoGP riders, former MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3. It is a good reward for the work we have been doing for eight years."
There have also been rumours circulating in recent weeks that Andrea Iannone is trying to get his way back into racing, as his ban ends at the end of this season. It appears that the experienced Italian riders ideal destination is with Ducati in WorldSBK. However, it does not seem like he will be with Motocorsa.
“I don’t think Iannone has taken us into consideration," said Mauri about Iannone. "In the press, I read that probably he spoke with Barni, Ducati and GoEleven. I don't know Andera Iannone; our policy is to have a younger rider with less experience. We’re doing things that don't happen because we are lucky."
