Ten Kate Honda’s Jonathan Rea has taken his second World Superport win of the year at Brands Hatch this afternoon but under difficult circumstances.
Fellow Brit and friend Craig Jones crashed from his Parkalgar Honda while leading and is currently in an induced coma in hospital.
In a race that was stopped twice, Rea had battled with Jones and team-mate Andrew Pitt, plus Josh Brookes from the Stiggy Motorsport squad. The race was red-flagged initially after rain fell in the early laps and Robbin Harms and Rusell Holland crashed at Graham Hill Bend. Neither were allowed back out for the re-start.
In the second part, Rea got the holeshot with Jones in second. Jones then took the lead on the second circuit but where he was better on the brakes, Rea kept coming back with a smaller horsepower advantage.
Karl Harris crashed out on lap six of the re-start, losing the front at Graham Hill. The race was then stopped when Jones crashed at Clark Curve.
Jones was awarded second place with Andrew Pitt third. However, the result was the subject of some controversy and we believe protested by the Ten Kate and Stiggy Motorsport teams.
