Sterilgarda Yamaha's Ben Spies managed to hold off a charging Max Biaggi to take the Brno World Superbike race two win this afternoon, making up for his disappointment in the opening leg.
The American was punted off by Xerox Ducati's Michel Fabrizio on lap four which handed a points advantage to championship rival Noriyuki Haga but the American pulled the gap back, crossing the line two tenths ahead of Biaggi.
As in race one, BMW's Troy Corser got off the line first and led into turn one with Biaggi and Spies in close attendance. It wasn't long before the lanky American was past the veteran Aussie, and Fabrizio followed him through a corner later.
Both Biaggi and Rea also passed Corser on lap one as Stiggy Honda's Leon Haslam one again got a good start, hauling himself to tenth from the fifth row of the grid. Haga also got away well, taking five places on one lap and finding himself behind the BMW.
Spies was desperate to make a break and had pulled more than half a second on one lap. It took Fabrizio and Biaggi five laps to catch the American, while Haga went past Corser with 15 laps to go.
As Fabrizio and Biaggi slowed themselves down as they swapped places, pushing each other wide, Spies managed to extend his lead to nearly a second but the American then began to come back to the battling Italian as Biaggi began to lap as fast as Spies.
The Aprilia man managed to make a pass stick and not run wide, and then set off in pursuit of the Yamaha, lapping in 1'59s as Spies got out of the seat as he tried to wind the throttle on too far. Biaggi got the gap right down, and pulling Fabrizio with him, but couldn't find a way past Spies.
Rea ended the race in fourth with Sykes getting the better of Shane Byrne for seventh. Leon Haslam faded at the end after lapping as quickly as the leaders, finishing 12th behind Shinya Nakano.
