'Canet would only need five races to be fast' - Sam Lowes discusses Moto2 riders switching to Superbikes

Gold & Goose

Sam Lowes believes that more riders will make the switch from the Moto2 Championship to the Superbike paddock.

Over the last few years, multiple riders have made the move from the Grand Prix paddock to the Superbike paddock into World Superbikes or World Supersport.

One of the more successful examples of the switch is Nicolo Bulega, as he left Moto2 and entered World Supersport, where he then won the Supersport title, before becoming a Superbike Championship contender.

However, one of the more recent examples was former MotoGP rider and ten-time Moto2 race winner, Sam Lowes. The British rider entered the World Superbike Championship in 2024, and since his arrival has featured on four Superbike podiums.

Lowes has become an advocate for the switch away from the Grand Prix paddock to the Superbike paddock.

"I'm convinced we will see many of them," Lowes told GPOne.com when asked about more Moto2 riders moving to Superbikes.

"In fact, I think it's a good opportunity for them and for those who will come. In Moto2, the bikes are all similar, while here in Superbikes, they are not.

"The difference, especially now that there are Pirellis, is not so evident in the way they ride. In fact, many of them train with road bikes like the Yamaha R1, and they are very fast.

"So, I think that Moto2 is the best school, even if, in the end, those who are in the other paddock cultivate the ambition to get into MotoGP."

One of the latest riders rumoured to switch to the World Superbike paddock is Moto2 Championship contender, Aron Canet.

The Spaniard has been overlooked by MotoGP teams on multiple occasions, but has attracted attention from Ducati and BMW.

Lowes, who has battled with Canet for four seasons, has no doubt that the Spaniard would be fast on a Ducati.

"Aron is a great rider, if he were to jump on a Ducati, I think he'd only need four, five races to be fast," he explained.

"I say that because Moto2 is a tough Championship, but one that gives you great preparation for new challenges.

"In my opinion, we shouldn't consider the Superbike Championship as something negative but as a great opportunity.

"In fact, coming to this paddock has certainly improved my life."
