Ten Kate Honda's Gino Rea missed out on the European Superstock 600 race win at Donington Park after he missed a gear going into the Melbourne Loop and had to settle for second.
The youngster didn't have enough engine braking to get his CBR600RR stopped and turned, and lost too much ground to re-take the lead going into the last corner on the final lap.
"That was a good but frustrating race. To just miss out on a win infront of my home crowd on the last lap is something I willnever forget. I got a pretty good jump off the line but got swamped back to fourth in the first corner. My first few corners were quite aggresive and I made my way back to second," said Rea.
"I got in a few battles and tried to stay calm as no-one was going to pull away. A couple of riders infront made a mistake and I was left in seconnd, just a couple of seconds off the lead. I felt I was riding good but was struggling in the last sector of the track. I pushed and closed in the leader and managed to make a pass.
"We swapped positions a few times and I had the lead coming into the second to last corner, I braked at my normal spot but missed a gear. I didnt have enough engine braking and couldn't stop for the corner.
"I wasn't close enough up the hill to make a pass into the last corner. I finished secnd and clawed back a lot of points for the championship. I'm now only four points off the lead. It was really nice to race in front of a British crowd and I felt they gave me a lot of support."
