DONINGTON WSB: SPIES ON POLE, BYRNE THIRD

Superpole three
Ben Spies 1'29.846
Max Biaggi 1'30.080
Shane Byrne 1'30.535

Sterilgarda Yamaha's Ben Spies has set his eighth World Superbike pole position of the season at Donington Park this afternoon after doing just one flying lap. As the riders went out for the final session, light rain began to fall and it was down to who was bravest on full slick tyres.

Aprilia's Max Biaggi was first on track an immediately set a fastest time of 1'30.080, followed by team-mate Shinya Nakano. Sterilgarda Ducati's Shane Byrne did two flying laps, which was enough to secure third on the grid, just in front of the Japanese Aprilia rider.

Xerox Ducati's Michel Fabrizio, who set the weekend's fastest lap so far in the second session, was caught out by the rain and heads the fifth row with team-mate Noriyuki Haga just behind him. Carlos Checa and Jakub Smrz round out the second row.

Michel Fabrizio 1'29.664
Ben Spies 1'29.776
Jakub Smrz 1'29.916

Fabrizio's blistering 1'29.664, set on a qualifier, is within a second of Casey Stoner's fastest race lap at Donington Park last year and eclipsed Spies' quickest time set only moments before.

Stiggy Honda's Leon Camier looked to have done enough to make it through to the third session, but Fabrizio went from 14th to fastest and that was it for the local man.

Ten Kate Honda's Jonathan Rea and Sterilgarda's Yamaha's Tom Sykes were both in the top four at the start of the session, but were slowly pushed further down and simply ran out of time, leaving Byrne as the only Brit left.

Carlos Checa 1'30.482

Airwaves Yamaha's Leon Camier was forced to take part in Superpole on a virtually stock YZF-R1 after a crash this morning left his racebike too badly damaged to fix in between sessions. He will start from 16th place on the grid for both of tomorrow's races.

The Kent youngster is in good company however, as Yukio Kagayama, two-times British Superbike Champion Ryuichi Kiyonari and former works Ducati rider Lorenzo Lanzi were also knocked out.
