Rizla Suzuki’s Tom Sykes is aching for a crack at Superpole during this weekend’s Donington Park World Superbike round and hopes a good qualifying time will carry him on to the podium.
The Huddersfield youngster, who claimed second place in the British Superbike Championship at Cadwell Park last weekend, raised the roof at Brands Hatch a month ago when he was dicing with the likes of Troy Corser, and aims to step onto the podium this time around.
And he believes that his determination and hard-riding will more than make up for the horsepower deficit between his Suzuki and the WSB-spec motors of his rivals.
"I’m absolutely over the moon and really looking forward to it especially after last time and how things were shaping up in the first race at Brands Hatch," said Sykes.
"I want to pick up from where I left off in race one and try to run in podium contention. In race two I faded towards the end so I’m hoping this time for no misfortune and we can use the good information we learned last time out to make sure we progress at the end of the race.
"It was good to get Brands Hatch under my belt, it is similar to BSB but with longer sessions. I’ve still not done Superpole and I had wanted to do that at Brands. I’ve done Super 12 but it is not the same as being on track on your own for Superpole. I’m a little anxious but looking forward to it at the same time.
"The support Rizla Suzuki and Tom Sykes had from the crowd at Brands Hatch was fantastic and it was a great feeling. If the fans do the same again it would be much appreciated, it’s great that they back me up and support me. In return I hope to do the business for them and give them something to cheer about. We shall see how the weekend unravels.
We are still running a BSB specification engine but I will make up for that with my riding. I’m confident my team will give me the best package and I if can mix it more at the front then that will be a bonus."
