MV Agusta’s Leon Camier expected to be on the pace in the opening World Superbike free practice session at Donington Park but was surprised to top the timesheets ahead of the factory Kawasaki and Ducati riders.
The Andorra resident wanted to make sure he was in the top ten riders who automatically go through to qualifying two in case it rains at the Leicestershire circuit so used two rear Pirellis to set a lap of 1’29.314 to edge out former champion Tom Sykes.
“You don’t need a lot of power at this track and normally our base setting for the bike doesn’t really change as it seems to work pretty well. I was sort of expecting to be fast in the first session because we are usually good and then the rest catch up, but I didn’t expect to be first,” said Camier, speaking to bikesportnews.com.
“I don’t think everyone used two tyres for that session whereas we did because some rain is forecast this afternoon and I wanted to try and make sure we would be in the top ten if that happens. The bike felt pretty good this morning so for sure there is not a lot more to come. We aren’t going to knock two seconds off but there are a few things we can improve.”
