Donington WSBK: Haslam under pole record on race tyres

BMW's Leon Haslam went under Carlos Checa's 2011 pole position time using standard race rubber and was then faster again in the final Superpole session on qualifying tyres setting him up well for tomorrow World Superbike double-header at Donington Park.

Checa set a 1'28.099 on a qualifier last year at the Leicestershire circuit which Haslam beat in the second Superpole session using race rubber. He then went faster again in the third session on the supers-soft rubber but was edged out by Tom Sykes' Kawasaki.

"In Superpole one, we had a small issue with the bike. After fixing that, we put on a qualifying tyre. Then in Superpole two, I clocked a new best lap on race tyres and was first. In the third session, we decided to use the qualifying tyre right at the end, but Tom was quicker. He keeps going and getting his pole positions," said Haslam.

"In general, the race tyres were working really well, but we were struggling a bit with the qualifying tyres. The times are very close and I think it is going to be an exciting race. There are a lot of riders who can be fast and for sure racing is always close at Donington. We have been working quite hard on race set-up and are pretty consistent. Now we have to see what the weather does but at the moment I’m pretty happy.”
