Donington WSBK: Lowes takes debut Supersport win

PTR Honda's Sam Lowes has finally lived up to his potential and won a World Supersport race this afternoon at Donington Park.

The former British Supersport Champion made a the step up in class last year and has been on the podium so many times, many thought the win might never come. Today, however, on home soil he rode a mature race to take victory over twice world champion Kenan Sofuoglu, setting the fastest lap with only one remaining.

Lowes caught a bug after ingesting too much river water during a publicity stunt late last week and this morning was the first time he had managed to eat anything. Despite this, and an injury to his pinkie finger too, he saw off challenged from Sofuoglu and his own team-mate Jules Cluzel to win.

"The weekend was a bit tough for me but in the race my Bogdanka PTR Honda was working fantastic so I'm really happy with my first win. I injured my finger yesterday and it's quite painful now but it wasn't a problem during the race itself so I'm happy about that too. After taking the lead I was just looking at my pit-board and focusing on lapping as consistent as I could," said Lowes.

"I upped the pace with two laps to go trying to extend my advantage a little bit and it worked alright so I'm really happy. It's great to take my first World Supersport in front of my home crowd and I'm really grateful for the support. There's a bit of a break now which is good as I can sort out my injured finger. I'll be training hard to come to Misano as fit as ever and ready to rock and roll."

After an early charge, Australian Broc Parkes settled into fourth place with wildcard Aussie Glen Richards, a front-runner in the British series, fifth. Sheridan Morais was sixth, Ronan Quarmby seventh, Valentine Debise eighth, Billy McConnell ninth and Fabien Foret rounded out the top ten.

Luke Mossey was the third Smith Triumph in the mix and he ended in 15 with Martin Jessopp one place further back and Keiran Clarke 17th.
