World Superbikes could be pared down to a series with just two support classes in 2014 as apparent plans by Dorna will see the elimination of European Superstock classes.
As the series' Spanish owner pushes WSBK to a more stock specification, the need for a 1000cc Superstock formula will no longer exist while the 600cc class will also go, replaced by a 250cc four-stroke series to sit alongside World Supersport.
It means that routes away from domestic championships are cut down and younger riders will increasingly be funnelled into the Soanish CEV series - owned by… you guessed it.
A more showroom-based paddock may forge tighter links with manufacturers in an effort to sell more units but with sportsbike sales dwindling in Europe, it may already be too late.
