I think I will remember this day for as long as I live. It was an absolutely brilliant feeling to stand atop the podium again, back where I belong. It hasn’t been an easy ride getting here but I kept stuck in for the past few seasons and today made it all worthwhile.
I entered the first corner on the outside of Cal, Sofuoglu and Pitty but I entered the second corner in 1st position instead of 4th. That was a defining moment in the race and it was necessary to be very aggressive.
I led for the majority of the race, only letting the guys past me to get a look at them before hitting the front again towards the end. Andrew’s gearing was better in a few areas, particularly on the run to the fast rights section where he passed me a few times.
But, my bike had the edge on his in a straight line and I was getting excellent drive exiting the last turn which allowed me to pass him long before the finish line. Pitty did everything right, he led into the last corner but I pipped him to the line. He was very gracious in defeat and not at all bitter so fair play to him.
Now I’m sure you’ve read about the confusion with my pit signals. I couldn’t figure out why I was getting P7 on my board yet when I dropped to 4th I got P4. So I hit the front another time and there it was, P7 again! I figured I must have incurred a penalty for something so I thought screw it, I’m gonna win this on the road at least.
And so I crossed the line in front albeit rather subdued, not at all happy with 7th position. It wasn’t until the world champ Andrew Pitt told me I’d won on turn two that I realised I’d just notched up the Parkalgar Honda team’s debut victory, as well as my own!
The team really deserved it and I was so happy I could reward all their hard work with a win today. You just have to look at how fast my bike was today to see how great a job Brains and the boys have done! Roll on Valencia I say.
