Gearbox problems put paid to Coghlan charge

Kev Coghlan's charge through the pack in Sunday's World Supersport race at Donington Park ended when his DMC Kawasaki developed a gearbox issue and the young Scotsman decided discretion was the better part of valour.

After qualifying in 12th place, Coghlan started to make his way up the order, chipping away at riders in front, but his gearbox started to malfunction and then, after a near-collision with Luca Scassa and an off-track excursion, he called it a day.

"I got a good start and made up a couple of positions straight away. I found it a bit difficult to work my way through at the beginning but after a few laps I could settle into my rhythm and chip away at the guys in front," said Coghlan.

"I had a bit of a battle with DeRosa, when already I started to have some issues with my gearbox. This lost me a little time before I could chase down Rolfo and Scassa in the group in front. Eventually when I did catch them the gear box was already a lot worse and really struggling to get fourth gear in particular.

"Nevertheless, I got past Scassa and set out again after Rolfo, when I lost fourth altogether. After jumping from third to fifth a few times, nearly getting wiped out by Scassa because of it, and eventually running off track, I decided to call it a day."
