Imola WSBK: Cluzel snatches Supersport pole

MV Agusta’s Jules Cluzel stole World Supersport pole late in the day at Imola from Kenan Sofuoglu after an exciting qualifying session.

The duo had been battling in the opening laps of the shootout session, with the Frenchman making his way to the top only for Sofuoglu to claw his way back in front and once he did the Turkish rider looked assured of another pole position.

Sofuoglu had set an excellent lap to regain the top spot and consolidated on his foruth lap with a 1’51.339 as the majority of the competitors chose to pit.

With five minutes remaining the riders re-emerged to put in their final efforts and with Honda’s PJ Jacobsen, Cluzel and Federico Caricasulo all on fast laps Sofuoglu looked in danger.

Jacobsen and Caricasulo fluffed their lines somewhat after both had taken the first sector excellently, but Cluzel kept on working on the MV Agusta and he blitzed past to snatch top from Kawasaki’s Sofuoglu with a 1’51.132.

That left the Kawasaki Puccetti rider second, ahead of Jacobsen, Randy Krummenacher, Lorenzo Zanetti and Ayrton Badovini.

Caricasulo, Alex Baldolini and a great performance from Gino Rea on the MV Agusta saw that trio make up the third row, with Ondrej Jezek rounding out the top ten.

Elsewhere, Britons Kyle Smith, Kyle Ryde, Stefan Hill and Luke Stapleford finished qualifying 14th, 22nd, 32nd and 37th.
