Imola WSBK: ‘Risks’ fail to pay off for crashing Laverty

Aprilia’s Eugene Laverty had a disappointing World Superbike weekend at Imola, after taking too many risks which resulted in the rider crashing at Rivazza 2 on only his fifth lap in race two. But it did start off on a positive note for the Irishman, as he did push his way to a third place podium finish in the opening race of the day.

Laverty was unhurt in the race two crash, and felt that he was making progress with his bike after race one. But from the start of the final race at the Italian circuit Laverty experienced issues with his bike, and he felt he was going off the pace of the other riders, which caused him to push even harder. But a mistake by the rider meant he finished his race weekend in the gravel.

“The result in Race one was definitely encouraging. We managed to improve the bike a lot between yesterday and today, even during the warm-up session,” said Laverty.

“For Race two I expected a second step forward, but unfortunately from the beginning I had some problems with the bike that cost me a lot at some points of the track. To stay in the race I had to take some risks and that led to my crash. It was a mistake on my part. I'm disappointed because I know that we're stronger than what we demonstrated today”.
