Jerez WSBK: Lowes fastest in opening Supersport qualifier

Yakhnich Yamaha’s Sam Lowes was locked in a battle with his team-mate Vladimir Leonov for the fastest time out on the Jerez circuit in the World Supersport first qualifying session this afternoon but in the end it was the newly crowned champion who took the spoils with a time of 1’44.043 to bag provisional pole.

His Russian colleague was two tenths of a second slower and had to settle for second fastest after his best lap of 1’44.269. It was a positive outing for Leonov, and he did lead the charge for thirty minutes, until Lowes went quicker.

MAHI Racing’s Kenan Sofuoglu rounded out the provisional front row, followed by Pata Honda’s Lorenzo Zanetti. His team-mate, Dutch rider Michael Van der Mark could not make it inside the top five times and ended the session in seventh, after a crash at Stio Pons, but he was unhurt and managed to re-join.

The rest of British contingent were never too far off the sharp end, with PTR Honda’s Danny Webb heading up the mid-pack in ninth. The youngster did fall in the gravel, and ended up in the pits. But he was not the only Brit to crash, DMC-Lorenzini’s Kev Coghlan completed the top ten with a 1’45.211, and even though he tumbled at Sito Pons he got back on his bike to finish the session.

Two tenths of a second behind the Scot was ParkinGO MV rider Christian Iddon, who ended the day in twelfth, and Rivamoto’s Jack Kennedy finished with the fifteenth fastest time with a 1’45.425 lap. PTR Honda's Lee Johnston and SMS Racing's Fraser Rogers ended the afternoon 22nd and 31st respectively.
