Jerez WSBK: Sofuoglu eyeing title after snatching World Supersport pole

Kenan Sofuoglu was back to his best in the Spanish sunshine today as he took pole for tomorrow’s World Supersport race.

The Turkish rider and his Kawasaki Puccetti Racing team-mate Randy Krummenacher were in a class of their own in Superpole Two as they ended the day first and second respectively.

Following his crash at the last round, Sofuoglu was keen to get his championship charge back on course and could win his fifth title tomorrow.

But as the session got underway it was his title rival Krummenacher who shot to the top of the timesheets first, only to be deposed a few minutes later by MV Agusta Reparto Corse rider Jules Cluzel.

However Sofuoglu had yet to show his hand, and as soon as he hit the track he went to the top, becoming the first rider to drop into the 1’43s.

As the minutes ticked by Sofuoglu got even faster but so did his team-mate who, with just over a minute to run, went quickest.

Sofuoglu wasn’t done yet and just moments later he stamped his authority once again with a lap of 1’42.969. He was the only rider who managed to get below a 1’43 and no amount of pushing from anyone else was going to steal pole from him.

Krummenacher held off Cluzel to start second with the Frenchman third, and the impressive Niki Tuuli fourth.

Britain’s Kyle Smith enjoyed a strong session and will line up in fifth spot aboard his CIA Landlord Insurance Honda with Alessandro Zaccone sixth on the San Carlo Team Italia Kawasaki.

America’s PJ Jacobsen on the Honda heads the third row in seventh ahead of Federico Caricasulo, with Illia Mykhalchyk ninth and Axel Bassani 10th

One rider who wasn’t out is Gino Rea. The Brit suffered a heavy off yesterday and after emerging battered and bruised he will play no further part in the weekend.

As a result of Rea not being there, there were only 11 riders out in the session instead of the usual 12.
