Jonathan Rea is still chasing consistent results in his debut season with Yamaha in World Superbikes, and with Portimao up next he has a good chance to do so.
After six rounds in the 2024 World Superbike Championship Pata Prometeon Yamaha rider, Jonathan Rea, finds himself 10th in the standings. This is an unusual position for the six-time WorldSBK Champion. However, the 2024 WorldSBK season has been nothing but usual.
Rea is still getting to grips with his new Yamaha R1, after making the unexpected switch from Kawasaki to Yamaha for this season. There have been signs of promise though, as two rounds ago Rea got his first podium in blue at Donington Park and was on pole earlier this season at Assen.
The 37-year-old has extensive experience around the Portimao Circuit having started all 35 WorldSBK races at the venue. Rea also holds the most WorldSBK podiums at Portimao with 25 to his name. With his experience and love for Portimao Rea is expecting decent results this weekend before a month off.
“Portugal is a really awesome place to go to," Rea said before round seven the WorldSBK season. "I love the circuit and there’s always a lot of travelling support from Northern Ireland as well – so there’s a good vibe in the race week! We’ve never raced there in August and it’s also an evening race which is new as well, I’m excited to see how we go.
"The back-to-back races in Donington and Most helped me to understand the Yamaha R1 a bit more and hopefully we can put that to good practice when it comes to Friday Free Practices. Like we’ve learned, qualifying is so important, so without putting too much pressure on myself – we need to qualify in a good position to give ourselves the best chance during the weekend. I can’t wait, I hope I can really get stuck in and bag some strong finishes!”
