Stiggy Honda's Leon Haslam says he wants to get some more consistency in his results so he can be a regular podium challenger instead of being second one week and then struggling for top tens the next.
The former HM Plant Honda man knows the South African track, having tested there with GSE Racing a couple of years ago and thinks that although his team have no data for the circuit, it shouldn't take too long to learn.
"I tested at Kyalami three or four years ago with the Airwaves Ducati team but I haven't raced there. We don't have any data for the Honda but it shouldn't take too long to get used to it," said Haslam, writing in his exclusive bikesportnews.com column.
"It's quite fast and flowing and should be good. It's a riders' circuit, which will suit me and there's a really fast left downhill which is a ballsy corner. It's the sort of place where you can go in hard and really load the front. It's a bit like Assen in that respect, and we went well there."
He added: "Looking back at the first five rounds our results are inconsistent – on the podium one week then messing up in qualifying and struggling to get into the top 10 the next. Monza was a good example, in the second race I was lapping at the same pace as the podium finishers but starting from the fourth row leaves you little chance of being near them.
“Once we’ve found a good base setting and a clear understanding of the machine I’m sure we’ll be a lot more consistent – hopefully starting this weekend in Kyalami. I’m averaging a bit better than sixth place points from the 10 races so far and I’d like to get that closer to fourth or third.”
