Laguna WSBK: Sykes overcomes ‘disappointment’ to taste victory

Kawasaki’s Tom Sykes is edging ever closer to his second World Superbike title, after extending his lead in the standings by 44 points, from Aprilia’s Sylvain Guintoli.

But the reigning champ was left feeling ‘disappointed’ after a mistake at the Corkscrew in the opening race at Laguna Seca meant he slipped back to third, behind the Aprilia duo of Marco Melandri and Guintoli.

A double was the aim for Sykes, and changes to his bike definitely paid off for the final outing of the day. He was able to get the hole-shot after the second re-start and held Guintoli at bay, to bring home his 22nd race win of his World Superbike career.

“The aim was to win the race, so race one was a bit disappointing. We made some changes in between races and the bike felt better,” said Sykes, at the track.

“In-between the red flags we made some tweaks to the bike which worked well. I have got a fabulous bunch of guys working for me. I am a gentleman so I do feel bad taking the win from the guys like that, but I will still take the win. I have got a few days to enjoy myself now and I cant wait to go into the summer break to get my hand and wrist sorted.”
