MAGNY-COURS WSB: SPIES TAKES SENSATIONAL POLE

Superpole three
Ben Spies 1'37.709
Jonathan Rea 1'38.181
Michel Fabrizio 1'38.196

Sterilgarda Yamaha's Ben Spies has taken pole position at Magny-Cours this afternoon with a sensational final lap which saw him go half a second quicker than Ten Kate Honda's Jonathan Rea.

Rea must have thought he had done enough with his 1'38.181 lap time but Spies, in his usual style, put in a qualifier and demolished the young Irishman's time.

Xerox Ducati's Michel Fabrizio took third with his last lap and pushed team-mate Noriyuki Haga on to the head of the second as Max Biaggi, on the Aprilia, has just jumped to fourth.

Stiggy Honda's Leon Haslam is in the middle of row two with Fonsi Nieto in seventh and BMW's Troy Corser in eighth.

Spies set the fastest lap of the weekend so far with his flying lap and Rea  continued to keep up his front runniinf pace. Corser got his last qualifying tyre in and move to third with the final lap.

The Aussie's third-place lap time was quick enough to knock out Shane Byrne, who had just elevated himself to eighth the lap before. Haga was sweating in his garage as he was sitting in seventh but survived to go through to the third session.
