Alvaro Bautista bagged Ducati’s 30th Misano WorldSBK win at the Italian track this morning as championship rival Jonathan Rea crashed but re-mounted - after his ZX-10RR had flipped over him - to take fifth place.
Rea had just lost the lead to Bautista when he went down at turn ten. As he held on to the big Kawasaki, it flipped over with the Irishman under it and clinging on to the bars. The crash, and retirement of Tom Sykes, promoted Alex Lowes to second and Leon Haslam to third, his first podium since Phillip Island.
It was a turnaround of fortunes for Alex Lowes (Yamaha) which saw him second after some other riders crashed, Lowes overtook a determined - but ultimately non-finishing - Tom Sykes (BMW Motorrad) on his way to second in dry conditions.
Another rider on the podium upswing was Leon Haslam (Kawasaki Racing Team) scoring third place. Toprak Razgatlioglu (Turkish Puccetti Racing) was fourth, right on Haslam’s tail.
Rea got going again after his fall to finish fifth, just ahead of local men Marco Melandri (GRT Yamaha) and Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Barni Racing Team Ducati).
Michele Pirro (Barni Ducati) secured eighth place, with Leandro Mercado (Orelac Kawasaki) and Lorenzo Zanetti (Go Eleven Ducati) completing the top ten.
Potential first time podium rider Sandro Cortese (GRT Yamaha) also crashed out from a strong position in a race where every rider bar one used the ‘X’ rear tyre, designed for either Superpole or a short race.
The final race for the WorldSBK riders gets underway at 14.00 local time in Italy.
