MISANO WSB: SMRZ ENDS SPIES' POLE RUN

Superpole three
Jakub Smrz 1'35.435
Jonathan Rea 1'35.609
Ben Spies 1'35.631

Guandalini Ducati's Jakub Smrz has sensationally brought to and Ben Spies' run of seven pole positions by snatching the top spot in this afternoon's Superpole session.

Smrz just held off Ten Kate Honda's Jonathan Rea to take his debut pole by a little under two tenths of the second, while it was the young Irishman's best performance of the season so far on a bike running new Ohlins suspension.

The previous pole master Spies, on the Sterilgarda Yamaha, could only muster third place but was only fractionally slower than Rea with Xerox Ducati's Michel Fabrizio rounding out the front row.

Shane Byrne was the leading British rider after Rea and heads row two with a lap slightly less than half a second off the pace  with Noriyuki Haga, Carlos Checa and Ryuichi Kiyonari finishing the second row.

Aprilia's Max Biaggi was knocked out of the final session by Kiyo's final lap of Superpole two which put him fifth and safely out of the drop zone while it demoted the Roman Emporer to ninth.

Stiggy Honda's Leon Haslam had another poor second session and was knocked out, as was Tom Sykes leaving Byrne and Rea as the only two Brits to make it into the top eight.

It was disaster for the Paul Bird Kawasaki team as both their riders were turfed out of Superpole in the opening session as Broc Parkes and Jamie Hacking joined Gregorio Lavilla and Ruben Xaus in the initial casualty list.

Rea set the quickest time with a 1'36.054 which was quickly followed by a great lap from Smrz while Kiyo saved his neck with a last-lap which put in the last available place as did Byrne who jumped from 19th to 12th.
